Make a Breakthrough for Our Local Community

What year it has been for The Somerset Breakthrough group, the highs are that many people are supporting our £ campaign & are continuing to do so, the low note is that group member Sue Loosley was seriously injured in a car accident in April, which had a very dramtic effect on us all, but we are very pleased that Sue is well on the road to recovery & is now working hard with the group to help us reach our target of £220,000 which 50% will be shared between Taunton Bath Yeovil & Weston super Mare breast cancer clinics. In the last year we have raised over £25,000 & we would like to say a very bigh thank you to all those who have supported us.
The remaning 50% will go to Breakthrough Breast Cancer
to fund vital research at the Toby Robins Breast Cancer Research Centre. The Centre, which was opened in 1999, is the Uk's first dedicated breast cancer research centre. It is recongnised as a centre of excellence working in partnership with the Institute of Cancer Research.
Breakthrough also campaigns for polices that support breast cancer research & better services.

" Breakthrough has been & will continue to be at the front of the fight  to gain access to the drug Herceptin to be available to all women who might benefit"                        Dr. Alan Ashworth  Director Breakthrough Research Centre

Dr Dorothy Goddard Consultant at Bath RUH Breast Cancer Clinic
" We receive approximately 4,000 new referrals at the breast unit in Bath each year. Most of our patients will have a mammogram or ultrasound examination & in order to do this we reply on the support of the local community to purchase equipment & keep up to date with technological advances. We are very grateful to the Somerset Breakthrough Group for their support".

Dr.Nick Gallegos Breast Cancer Consultant at Weston super Mare, agreed " The Campaign will deliver tangible benefits for the many women in the region living with breast cancer".

This October see's the launch of the Somerset Breakthrough group's new leaflet along with Breakthrough's new Pink Ribbon Pin & TLC Pink Wristbands which are available in your local shops
The Somerset group has a new leaflet which gives information about Breakthrough & the group.

Last year, Breakthrough carried out a survey of over 2000 women to find out their views on breast cancer.Although breast cancer was women's number one concern, only two thirds of women said they checked their breast regularly, Surprisingly although 80% of breast cancer cases occur in women over the age 50 women in this age group were the least likely to be breast aware. Breakthrough has come up with a catchy slogan that it hopes all women will remember & will promt them to check their breasts regularly. The simple slogan is
'Show your breasts some TLC: Touch, Look Check'.
Touch your breast. Feel for anything unusual
Look for changes.  Be aware of their shape & texture.
Check anything unusal with your doctor.
Chat with your friends if your worried.
